U.S. company Alcoa Wednesday announced the release of its next-generation aluminium alloy armour designed to counter evolving explosive threats.

Alcoa launched its new C79A aluminium alloy armour plate in a move to provide tactical military vehicles with a new durable troop protection solution that improves ballistic performance and reduces weight.

Alcoa released its next-generation armour plate at the Association of the United States Army Winter Symposium and Exhibition in Florida, taking place through Friday.

"For more than a century, Alcoa has been the world leader in aerospace alloy innovation," David Dobson, Alcoa Defense president, said in a statement.

"Almost all aerospace alloys in use today were developed by Alcoa. We are taking that same commitment to alloy innovation and applying it to the defence armour market to make the military lighter, faster and stronger."
