Platinum Australia up and running at Smokey Hills after lighting strike

Operations at Platinum Australia's Smokey Hills mine in South Africa returned to normal over the weekend after successful repairs on damage caused by a lightning strike on January 26.

The platinum group metals mining group advised that repairs to the control panel of the generators at Smokey Hills were completed on January 29, which meant that the milling and flotation sections of the treatment plant could be restarted the same day.

Mining operations and the crushing section of the plant were unaffected by the stoppage of the generators as they were able to draw on power from the Eskom grid.

Platinum Australia has previously indicated that it expects the mine's permanent link to the state power utility's grid to be completed in March-April this year. This would ensure that production is not affected if similar incidents occur in the future.

The company anticipates that the stoppage will result in a loss of production of approximately 1,000 ounces of 4E PGM (platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold).
