Alcan Inc. is pleased to join Aluminerie Alouette, of which the Company holds a 40 percent stake, today in announcing the completion of the smelter's CAN$1.45 billion expansion project on budget and ahead of schedule.
The expansion more than doubles Alouette's annual current production from 245,000kt to 550,000kt, confirming its status as North America's largest aluminium smelter. As a result, Alcan's production at the smelter will increase by 122kt per year.
"We are delighted with the successful completion of this important strategic milestone for Alouette. It further underlines Alcan Primary Metal Group's drive to maximizing value and meet customers' needs," said Cynthia Carroll, President and Chief Executive Officer, Alcan Primary Metal Group. "This is not only a great testament to the world-class facility here at Alouette, but also demonstrates Alcan's involvement in the surrounding communities through the creation of excellent job opportunities," she added.
Begun in May 2003, the second phase project has contributed to the direct creation of 350 new jobs, increasing the total number of employees at Alouette to 900.
